Can't install WMP or play WMAs/WMVs

I have a PC running Windows XP Pro + SP2. I can't install Windows Media Player 11. It says, "This version of Windows Media Technologies is incompatible with this version of Wondows". I can't even play WMA or WMV files in other players also. Please help.

^Why go for WMP 11 when you have better alternatives at hand?
Have you got latest K-Lite codec pack installed? If not then better give it a try.Download the file from here.

It has Windows Media Player Classic bundled with it which AFAIK is the best resource free player.Alternatively you can get VLC or BS player by googling for it.

@lahratla - Can you tell what is your Windows XP build? It can be found in My Computer-->Help-->About Windows

It would be a good idea to install all the latest Microsoft Updates. I guess that you might not be having the Windows Installer 3.1 which is the installer that is needed to install WMP 11.
