Default windows defragmenter is slow and resource hug. Diskeeper is very popular defragmenter. But it is a paid version. You can download 30 day trail pack from here. Diskeeper 2007

After that what? No problems, here is a link for free Download of Auslogics disk defragmenter. It is a popular one and totally free!

Auslogics Disk Defrag 1.0.3

no matter what tool u use to do a proper defrag in FAT file system it will take a lot of time...

if u r in Windows 2000 or XP or Vista ... make sure u r in NTFS file system... here it will take a lot less with Windows Default tool...

NTFS is definately faster and you also get added security fetures.
Using the default windows defrag tool I can defrag my 80gb NTFS drive in bout 15~20 mins but earlier [when it was in the FAT file system] it used to take roughly 1.5~2hrs.

that sums it up...

also one more thing... If u defrag a Drive with 0 files in it... it will be faster... but while u r defraging a drive with 90% full... well it will take more....

Raxco's PerfectDisk is the best defrag software out there, but it's a paid software. Give it a try.

If you're looking for a free option only, then stick to the defrag utility that comes by default in win xp, it's also okay.

@piyush619, what does Tune-Up Utilites has to do with Defragmentation.

it has only "Registry Defragmenter" & not file defragmenter.

5 minutes is too low to believe! May I know the frequency of defragmentation? How often you do it?
I doubt that Defragmentation is not 100% successful.

I use defrag in XP and it takes only 2-4 minutes. May be because I do it frequently. I also occasionally use Sys Mechanic for the same purpose.

@ax3, it depends on the way you use your PC.

If you do lot of Video Editing, Game Modding, Creation/copying of Files..., then you may have to Defragment Frequently.

Just stick to what The DEFAULT MS Defragmenter advices, whether the drive needs Defragmentation. (for this select the drive & press "Analyze")

one more thing i have noticed while defragmenting if a AVS auto scanner is on.. its takes more time.. while if u turn of the Auto file scanner of running AVS it takes lot less... both with FAT and NTFS file system...

well use any deragger (i prefer and user disk keeper)
but do one thing before defragging.
dissable hibernation before defragging and enable it after defraging completes

reason > The Hiberfil.sys file, which can be very large, is a special system file that Disk Defragmenter cannot defragment. Therefore, the presence of the Hiberfil.sys file will prevent Disk Defragmenter from performing a thorough defragmenting operation.

Use Diskeeper 2007. It can defragment comfortably in any condition. It's real-time defragmenter is awesome! Unarguebly, the best one I have ever seen. Just install it and forget it, rest of the things diskeeper does it automatically!

From my personal experience i would recomend pepole not to go for O&O Defrag. I had very tough time with it because it doesn't defrags ystem mea data file and caused my PC to have a maximum simultaneous space to 500mb and a highly fragmented system. Then I swithced to perfect isk and it fixed the problem
