Default OS Choice Menu Prob!

Hi Everybody! Merry X-Mas.
--------------------------

I hv WinXP PRO installed in c: drv.
While booting I'm being given the following choice :
1. Windows XP Professional
2. Previous OS in C: drive
3. Windows XP Installation/Upgrade
4. Windows XP Recovery Console.

I wanna keep only option 1, how to go abt it?
-------------------------------------------------
At 1st it had only 1st 2 options, so I tried to go into Windows Recovery Console using Win XP setup disk. Tried FIXMBR, did not work, and moreover option 3 was added.
------------------
Then Loaded Recovery Console into the HDD, and in the boot record.
Booted into it as option 4, tried "FIXMBR /device/harddisk0". Did not work.
------------------
And option 2, useless, it just shows me windows 98 boot menu ->1.Normal, 2.Safe Mode ...etc, but doesnot work.
------------------
Any Help ?

Do this
1) Right Click My computer ,
2) Properties --Then Click Advanced .--And under Startup and recovery click settings
3) Find and click Edit button ..
4) A note pad will open with something like this in it :-
Quote:
[boot loader]
timeout=0
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Macos " /NoExecute=OptIn
Delete the lines from multi to the end ...for all the options you want to delete . Remember to keep one option you want .
You are done ...Click save .
Merry Christmas !!

1st option gets me to XP.
2nd option halts the system giving a err stating windows could not start as hall32.dll missing.

Default No Luck

Did not work!!

Did what u said.

In boot menu :

1.Previous OS in c:\ -> Win 98 Boot options with none working
2.Windows (default) -> hal32.dll missing!!
----------------------
Moreover had to boot up using Win98 boot disk.
Had to rename boot.ini to boo.iii and boot.ini.bak to boot.ini!!!
[Attrib -r -s -h c:\boot.ini had to be used for the abv. And Lucky me I use Notetab which automatically creates a .bak extension backup of any edited file!!]
Then got back 3 options at boot menu :
1.XP
2.Previous
3.Upgrade.

selected 1, now after starting XP, I found out MEMEORY_PAGEFAULT --> BSOD (Blue Screen of Death)!!
After booting into safe mode I found out that :

my D,E,F drives lettering had got mixed up!!!
Hence none of theprograms were founding there locations!!!

Re Letterd the drives in safe mode and now working OK.

But the bott menu problem remains!!!!

Any more ideas ?
Also Why did the letter change happend? [Suffered frm ir erlier too].

One question:

win 98 was in c: that means it was ur first partition, then xp is also in the first partition? if xp was installed in the c: (first partition) after uninstalling win 98 then ideally the win98 option shud not have appeared.

change of drive letters was most probably due to win98. It was using the drive letters initially assigned when 98 was present. now u edited the boot file , so the naming was changed. (most probably) thats my explaination.

plz do tell now which partiton is named what.

Ideally u shud have:

[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

hope this solves ur problem

I hv 80 GB Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM as Pri Master and 40 GB Seagate 5400 RPM as Pri Slave.
80GB -> 4 partitions [C,D,E,F]
40GB -> 4 partitions [G,H,I,J]

I didn't hv winXp bootable setup disk, so I used Win98 bootupdisk and then Fdisk to partition my HDDs.

Then After installing SmartDrive from Dos, I had Installed XP.

Kept C as Fat32 and rest as NTFS as WIn98 boot disk doesn't recognise NTFS.

It was working fine.

Later I tried to boot into dos using Win98 boot disk, since then I was getting two booting options:
1>XP
2>Previous OS
----------------------
Then tried to use fixmbr , 4 tht had to load WIndows Recovery Console using WInXP setup.

After this the 3rd optn was added,
3>Upgrade/Install.

Ok, Following Serendipiti, The Upgrade/Install Option [3rd] was considered invalid and removed.
Now Boot.ini :
Quote:
[Boot Loader]
Timeout=10
Default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S
[Operating Systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
C:\ = "Previous Operating System on C:"
Now how to remove the 2nd option : C:\Previous .... , simple deletion will do?
