I would recommend 'Transcend' Pen drive. I am using it from past 6 months without any problems.

Things to look for in pen drives:
1. Whether it is flash based memory or Hard disk based memory
2. It's reading and writing speed
3. It's build quality. Go for rugged built pen drive. Transcend offers the best.
4. Compatibility with operating system. Most of pen drive manufactured now-a-days are compatible with most of operating systems. Just see that it is operatable without loading additional software.
5. Look for a pendrive with extension wire accessory. It is handy when you want to connect many external USB devices simultaneously to your PC.

There are pendrives manufactured by Hitachi and Sony which are called Microdrives. These are of same size as other portable memory cards. These have very high storage capacity.

Regarding ruggedness of devices, it is the build strength of the device.

MyFlash 1gb is great, thousands of designs to choose from, usually comes with extra features and best of all, it cost much less than other brands.

Again Transcend is a good choice. Bit expensive though compared to the gray market Sony USB-cum-mp3 players, but quality and warrenty is worth to pay for it.

In Transcend, prefer JetFlash series instead of V20 / V30

Vxx series have very slow write speed while JetFlash series have high write speed.
Read speed is almost same for both.
