whatis 16 bit?

i have seen many time in the digit mag. and even on the ic chip mag. .they have mentioned many time about "...... is a 64 bit os""....... is a 32 bit os"can anyone plz plz plz plz help me to know whatdoes that mean.it may be silly to ask this basic question.but i want to know what does that it means.i am doing my 11th standard.
