Default Www2, Www3 ???

Some websites start off with a www2 or a www3; what is it? How is it different from the standard www that we are accustomed to?

normally www2 (or www3) is used where there is more than one server involved with a website. i dont think it signifies anything in particular, and is just another subdomain.
