NetBeans is a Java IDE itself. Its good, or you can even try Eclipse, I liked that.

Here, have a look at the Top 7 IDEs as said by Sun themselves.
http://java.about.com/od/idesandeditors/tp/top_ides.htm

I like Eclipse, but havent used GUI/etc in java and not much of NetBeans really.

For some reason I don't hold with IDEs anymore. I'm sticking with my editor. There are some cool ways to turn it into an IDE like environment, but retaining its functionality. I've tried eclipse, and It's good. Just because I don't know how to use it doesn't mean it's useless

NetBeans or Eclipse are for Java Pros. It takes some time to learn how to do things
properly!! You can try JCreator. Get it from here.
It comes with a Pro version (shareware) & another one is free. You can also try
NetBeans IDE BlueJ Edition. It's for programmers new to Java, also for school
students learning Java. It' s very easy to use. Get it from here
