Default 32 bit or 64 bit is standard?

i bought a msi rs 480 m2-IL motherboard with AMD athlon 64 3500+ processor. now is the 64bit architecture enabled already or is a bios update required to convert to 64 bit? i tried installing win xp 64bit but i kept getting an error msg saying it is not supported. i installed win xp 32 bit and then with vmware tried installing linux ubuntu 64 bit but again got an error msg saying it is not compatible.
what can i do to install 64 bit OSes?
other spec : 1 gb ram 400 mhz, 200 gb sata hdd, sony dru-810 a DVD-RW

varun......i better suggest go to msi site and get all the pdf file and read faq there on msi...........

i strictly think u need drivers to run that.......alsocheck your bios thoroughly for any 64 bit option.....also if any new version of buios is there...install that....but not the beta one
