Default what if power goes off while data transfer in ext hdd


i recently purchased a 200GB Seagate HDD alongwith USB+Firewire casing....
everytime i have to remove the hard disk , i hv to first click on that safely remove usb mass storage device icon in system tray.......but what if power goes off during data transfer .....would it affect my hdd in any way? i dont hv a UPS

Yes that's the risk due to which I dropped the plan of having an external HDD, earlier my assumption was that it draw power from usb ports, but that was not the case.
