Default Strange net problem..

My friend is facing a problem.. his hostel gives net access, but he isnt able to use software like bit torrent ,etc and all other p2p and yahoo voice chat,, as well as file transfering via messengers doesnt work... because their college might be blocking some ports (using a firewall) or somethin.. is there anyway to avoid this ? or get access to some other port or something ? OR how can he get these p2p softwares to work ?

probably ur friend doesnt have access other than http. His hostel is not configured for anything else. It is possible to get P2P tools working from behind a firewall. Use tools such as hopster (google it) and then configure the p2p client to connect to it. Also do a lil search in the forum. There are plenty of threads on bypassing firewalls.

most of old posts have been deleted it seems
i had posted all the funda that one needs to know abt making it work inside firewall ..
but well ..
crusader .. all u need is HTTP-Tunnel or Hopster
both softwares do the same thing .. only one is needed
hopster has a 2kpbs speed limit for free account
and http-tunnel is clogged up at times ..
i suggest u try http-tunnel 1st

Well hi,i am that friend
I am in IITM,and we have our own IP addresses which is routed through a common server/bandwidth.
The think is that the insti is blocking all P2p's and i cant use Bit Torrent.
I want to know is there anyway to bypass the firewall.
Thanks

Well most of these Softwares like Http Tunnel and Hopster dont usually work a lot with the Firewall blockage of the ISP.....just tell ur friend if he can download during late night hours cause probably thats the time When these ISP's usually shut out their Firewall.....

ok ..
here's the tutorial to ->

Get Bittorrent Working behind a Firewall
-----------------------------------------------

( im not talking abt your computer's firewall , its about your college or institute's firewall for your internet connection .. so that you only have port 80 open )

you need

1. A Bittorrent Client called BitConjurer -> http://bittorrent.com/download.html
Dont try any other client .. cos im not very sure it works for others or not
Download and install the client .. It wont create any shortcuts or anything .. It will simply copy required files in 'C:\Program Files\BitTorrent\' directory

2. SocksCap -> http://www.socks.permeo.com/Download...load/index.asp
This software converts all GET requests from an application to access internet into Socks-requests ..
Download and install it .. i will tell you how to configure it ..

3. HTTP - Tunnel -> http://www.http-tunnel.com/html/solu...nel/client.asp
This software converts all socks requests going from your computer into HTTP- requests ..
Install the software and configure it to use a specified proxy if you have one or put it in 'no proxy, only firewall' mode .. whichever is applicable to you
Now, run HTTP-Tunnel

4. Download the .torrent file from internet .. ( i hope you know sites from where this can be done )
Say the file name is "my movie.torrent". Put this file in a directory where you want to download the movie. Say "E:\movies\" ... so the total path of file is "E:\movies\mymovie.torrent"

5. Now, open SocksCap .. press 'New'
Now Give ...
Profile Name = anything you like
Command Line = "C:\Program Files\BitTorrent\btdownloadgui.exe" "E:\movies\mymovie.torrent"
Working directory = "E:\movies\"

Look the command line closely ... its -> "path to btdownloadgui.exe file" *space* "path of .torrent file"
and the working directory is the directory where .torrent file is stored

6. Now simply 'Run' the entry you've just made ...
It will open a small window where you can see the status of your download file ...

I hope this whole this is clear to you .
If there are any doubts just post it here

PS: Obvious Question:: Why doing all this $hit ?
Answer:: cos, all bittorrent clients use ports other than port 80 to connect and download .. when institutes install firewall .. only port80 is kept open.
So you somehow need to redirect your application's requests in other ports towards port 80 ... and i only know this method to do the same..
If somebody else has a better method .. please post it here

yes it works ..

but all this is very tricky ..
i (obviously) cant say with full surity !!!

i think if your server does not restrict MIME file types .. or file size ..
then it shud work

PS: Just turn over to this link http://www.thinkdigit.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=119117 ..
we can talk more there
