a minor correction:
gmax isnt free anymore. apparantly discreet want you to buy even to learn.
as a substitute try blender or k3d

an addition:
autogk and gordionknot in video tools. they are usefull for ripping and creating dvds.
downloadable from sourcefroge.

edit: k3d is also downloadable from sourceforge.
