Some Questions I hav regarding xp.

Here r some questions i'm having after installing sp2.

1. It is said that Zone alarm does not run properly in sp2 (digit sept 04). I tried installing it from the digit cd. it got installed from the july cd.its working alright. how come?

2.i installed tweak xp pro. its a trial version. so once it expires will all the settings revert back. also i installed system mechanic. its also trial version.is there any free software similar to tweak xp?

3. in the May 04 digit, where ice's tips on improving os performance was given. he recommended installing zoom. can anyone give me the link to download it. any user who has experienced its working plz give ur suggestion.

4. There is always a difference in the free memory shown by AIDA and tweak xp.why? for memory optimisation in tweak xp to work it should be always running. that means load on the system and long boot up time. is there any other way ? any other memory optimiser only software. plz suggest. is 256 MB ram less.

5. which firewall is more lighter and effective. zone alarm or sygate ?

6. There are some entries in my "add remove programs" list which do not work. i mean there is f-16 demo which doesnt get uninstalled ( shows " d:\programfiles..........demo\unistall.isu is not valid or corrupted). then there is tribes ( game) the folder of which got deleted by mistake. any solution?

7. similarily in the msconfig box there r many entries of software which i have already uninstalled. i remember there is a way to clear them out by editing autoexe or smthng. plz give the procedure. there is also an entry 8o> revert settings. i have unchecked it. what is it.?

8. is there any way to stop the security control centre from appearing in the system tray?

I've got my OS patches with SP2 and Zone Alarm is working fine here too. In the article it said some softwares"might" not work with SP2. Guess it has something to do with different releases of the OS!

I use FreeRAM XP Pro 1.40. Find it in June 2004 CD "Greatest 101 Freeware". Its takes up little resource. You can even remove it from startup and call it up whenever you fee ystem is low on memory!

Effective = Zone Alarm! But its resource hungry. Outpost is supposed to be a good alternative.

Have you tried a third party software like System Mechanic? That should do the trick!

For the rest of your questions, I'll wait for someone to answer them. I'm myself looking for a solution of your Question 7! Hope this helps!

Use RegSupre PRO to clear Regestry entries and remove corrupted Add/Remove Entreies.

1) the problem was with some older versions of zonealarm
u probably installed the on with sp2 support

5) zonealarm is the best ive come across with tolerable cpu load

8) if u want to disable security centre completely make a txt file and put the followin in it
then save it as a .reg file and run it and let it enter on ur registry

9. What r duplicate entries? system mechanic shows a lot of duplicate entries in my system. one is from windows/sytem folder while other is from servicepack folder. what to do?

hmm these softwares are pretty intuitive ....
they remove multiple entries without causing any trouble
it happens sometimes that some installations make duplicate entries in the registry .. or when u uininstall and reinstall a software ... the previous entries dont get deleted and new ones are made
thats how this happens

also when u uninstall software and the entries arent deleted .. and u dont reinstall .. those are the junk entries ... which also the software removes without problems

anywho i suggest u take a back up of ur registry ... go ahead and delete those entries .. and see for a day or 2 whethere everything is workin fine ....

Khubbu try googling and dl a tool called RegCleaner its from macecraft only cool tool. U can do all sorts of things with it (registry, msconfig all).

but the question is that deleting these duplicate entries would in anyway boost performance. i dont think so. so maybe i shud leave it as it is.

My 3,6 ,7 questions are still unanswered.

i have disabled the security centre through the services ( searched on the forum, much better for people like me who dont want to touch registries).

And one more thing softwares like tweak xp and system mechanic do what we can do manually, its just that they provide an easy interface.
for eg to make icons transparent tweak xp made an entry in the startup, which can be done manually through system properties. so i dont htink i need them.

I had once installed a program called Regcleaner on my old pc. is there any new version of it. plz give the link. it was a nice light utility for cleaning registries.

for q 6 and 7, install System mechanic, and clean up ur system, and also delete the invalid registry and broken link with the same!

Forgot this one before! You can disable baloon tips from appearing in the system tray by using XP-Antispy.

Uncheck all options in the preceding dialog box .. Ok ..

Delete the entries that you want to delete .. You should also check RunOnce, RunServices keys ..

Delete the entries which arent uninstalable .. You can also delete entries here that you dont want to uninstall so you may unsintall accidently .. Like my soundcard driver Uninstall itself if I just click on it in Add Remove Program applet .. No questions asked ..

but I know about a certain program called Zoom 1.3.1

answer is according to me softwares vary in their reactions according to the environment they are installed in so its an exception that za is workin fine in ur case. the reasons may be many.

answer there is nothin free in this world so the only best replacement u get to what tweak does is microsoft's tweakui powertoys from microsofts site. the only difference is that after the trial period expires it wont revert the settings back. if u want the full version of tweak xp i will guide u in finding it

answer is zoom is gud for accelerating the startups and shutdowns . the best thing i can suggest is to get HARE AS ALREADY SUGGESTED BY SOMEONE. FROM http://www.dachshundsoftware.com/index.html.check out the pages. these softwares also probably need registering the keygens of which u can easily find if not kontakt me

buddy fact is the softwares that say that they reduce the system load by freeing up the memory are all simply bugging ur mrmory. what i will advice u is to increase ur system paging file the procedure of which i will be tellin u later on ON DEMAND.so installin something for simply freeing up system ram memorty is worthless. best will be to remove worthless programs which start up at system startup by configuring the msconfig. this will keep ur system startup time really healthy.this is my personal experience coz i am using a system eith 256 MB SDRAM not DDR RAM. i had some softwares runnin but then i uninstalled them and remopved junk programs startin up at the uptime. so now my system works fine.

the fact is both sygate and zonealarm use different techniques to protect ur system and as far as my ecxperience goes the best is Zonealarm and it is very very less in utilising the system resources. i will advice zonealarm security suite which has firewall antivirus (and believe me its a gud one) and a privacy blocker or somethin which i dont use

the solution for this is quite simple my dear watson all u have to do is reinstall the offending programs and then un install them properly. this shall solve ur problems.

the other way is to download and install software like add remove plus which will remove invalid uninstall entries.
try the first solution for problems pertaining to uninstallable products and remember to install in the default or the folder which u chose to install in the first place.

the answer to this problem is unclear to me also and i also dont know how to remove entries from the msconfig boxi need answer to this also.

Hey batty, that reg edit link only shows the checked entries in the startup dialog box. How are the entries which are already unchecked in msconfig>startup, removed?

They are in Run(-) Key .. I dont have any disabled entry So I cant confirm right now ...
