If you connect 80 wire it may yield hgher transfer speeds.A 40 wire cable is thick and doesnt break on frequent connect/disconnect. An80 wire cable has thin wires and is delicate.

I own a LiteOn DVD Writer and I have a bad experience with 80 wire cables, they get damaged very easily.
so for safe, go with the 40 wire cable.

yeah 80 conductor cables are more prone to damage
and no it makes no sense connecting dvd writers with 80 conductor cables .. else mobo manufacturers would bundle 2 instead of 180 and 1 40

80 conductor cables are mainly required for hdds

Yes I think optical drives are not capable of making use of the speed of the 80 pin cable and that may be the reason why they are not being bundled with the optical drives. But I happened to read somewhere that 80 pin cables emit less radiation which may interfere with other devices and hence using it.
