what is the registry tweak to switch off and on the writing ability of the CD R/W?

U can disable the Imapi service using msconfig or services in administrative tools. Or Enable the option Remove CD Burning Features (In User Configurations -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Windows Explorer) by using gpedit.msc.

It'll Disable the Built-in CD burning feature in XP.

U can also uninstall CD burning s/w (like Nero, etc), so that no1 can burn the CD using such s/w!
