Default WHICH DVD ROM DRIVE TO BUY?

hi, i want to know which dvd rom drive i should buy. i already have a L.G cd writer (52x). so i dont want to buy a combo drive. my vendor has a sony dvd drive 16x but i thought i would do some research before buying.
i have heard that some dvd drives dont play certain format dvd's . i want to know what is the meaning of dvd+r/rw and dvd-r/rw also what is dvd audio and can these drives play dvd audio. i was told that dvd drive would cost around 1600. my p.c config is intel 2.8 h.t ,915gav(intel orignal),512 mb ddr(400mhz),80g.b sata 7200 segate h.d.d,L.G 52x writer. do i need a graphic card?? so please tell me which dvd drive plays dvd+r/rw and dvd-r/rw . i forgot to ask what double layered dvd's are and which drive plays it.
please mention some specification of the drive u recomend.

does anybody have a sony 16x , should i buy sony(afterall "it's a SONY)??

GOD i hate this minimum time between posts !!!!
anwyasy here i type again sigh

dont go for samsung
samsung sucks
samsung gives tray problems
most forum members will tell u the same
no offence to dr grudge

go for lite on drives .. they are the best .. unless ur gettin a dvd iter then dont get a lite on go for pioneer

dont go for combo dirves they do have a failure rate
also its better to have a separate writer and a separate dvd rom

all dvd players play all the formats ... atleast the new ones ...
the problem comes if u write a dvd on one drive .. it might not be detected on another companies dvd rom or dvd writer
but this is rare

dvd 5 /single layered single sided = 4.7gb
dvd 10/single layered double sided = 8.4 gb
dvd 9/double layered singlesided = 8.4 gb

for dvd 10 the data is written on both sides of the disk and u have to flip the disc to read the other side
dvd 9 does not require flipping
this is the only diff between the 2

for more on dvd formats

Me too, except as darklord told me, sony has 2 16x dvd drives, du1661 or sumthn like that and 1663 or somehting, one is made by some asian producer, and the other by liteon. The non-liteon drive is slow.[i own it]. My luck eh. Slow in the sence , after a i put a cd/dvd it takes a while for the autorun to load. Otherwise the drive is top notch. No complaints.

One Advice - Go for a DVD COMBO
