Default aLL THE fun taken out of HL2

hi,

i recent ly installed HL2 on my laptop (compaq nx6130) which has

256mb ram (think it's DDR2) , and Ati X300 card. i thought i can play hl2 @ 800x600 @ med details without anti aliasing, but the game's running really badly.

i'll ' giv u a sample..

"rise and shine, mister mister mister mister mister freeman, rise rise rise rise and shine shine shine shine shine"

What can i do to smoothen the game? the prob persists at lowest detail possible, @ 640x480.

My friend, who has the same config (& intalled from the same pi****d cds), plays the same @ 1024x768 @ high detail...

what is this majick?

i also noticed in the console that my processor is detected as 797 mhz, when it truly is 1.7ghz. could this be the cause f the prob?
