25 to 30k, well U come in the value catagory

I would recomend an AMD AthlonXP system, not intel

AMD AthlonXP 2800+ Barton core, 512 KB L2 cache
Asus A7N8X normal version
GeForce FX5200 with 128 MB RAM
Keyboard, mouse, speakers of your choice
17" Samsung Syncmaster 773MB monitor
80 GB Seagate HD, 7200 RPM, 7200.7 model
Samsung SM-352B or N Combo drive
Modem, if U will use Dial-Up cos the motherboard has onboard LAN for Cable net or broadband

Since U R eng.s student, U will sure do coding, so for that Windows 98 is highly not recomended, go for XP SP2 pro with any linux U want

gx has suggested a good system.also go for a 2600+ instead of a 2800+ and also if u dont need a 80-GB harddik just go in for a 40gb one.and also samsung optical drives r cr@p.go for lite on.and also after saving money by buying a 2600+ u can get a liteon 52x/32x/52x writer.and the 2600+ is a pretty fast processor anyway.

vysakh
what makes u think ull get that config under 30 k ?
that comes up to ard 26k+ without the altec lansings ...
do u know how much altec lansing 5.1's cost ?
that too considerin a non flat 17" monitor ... and not consisering the cabinet and a min of 400 W PSU which would cost abt 2.5k

<===***AND NOT EVEN COUNTING THE PROCESSOR!!!***===>

go with what Gx gave u except I would say stick to the 2600+ rather than a 2800+ and the Liteon drives than the Samsung drives. Rest stays the same mate.
