Default Generic Volume Cannot be stopped.


When i try to remove my external USB HDD using the Remove Hardware in the system tray i get this error -

Generic Volume Cannot be stopped. Try later.

I dont have any sound card related thing working.. NO messenger, no music.

Any idea ??

Try reinstalling drivers...

Also, sometimes, if you have "my computer" open with the usb hdd explored, you will have to close it and try again...

reinstall drivers for what ??
I have XP and its plug and play for the HDD.. i havent installed any drivers..

Hmm... does the motherboard not have usb drivers? try and update them... could be the cause of problem though I am not sure... BTW, how old is he winxp install? Sometimes, as we install more and more software, it is possible for drivers to be overwritten by other drivers that might cause minor problems such as this...

I also had a similar problem once, but I dont remember how I solved it...

do u get this error all the time or only ocassionally

i get this sometimes... u can logoff, kill explorer and then try again...

drivers have nothng to do with this afaik

I get this error 9 out of 10 times.... will try the Explorer thing...

Check if ur antivirus is scanning something on that disk..

check for the following
1. Is write caching enabled for the drive ?? that might cause this error message to occur

2.are u runnig any applications from the disk ?

3.as suggested by kalpik,check if any antivirus or spyware prog is running ,although not necessarily on that particular disk,could be ur fixed drive also.
