Default Folder Settings not being saved

I have a P4 2.60c GHz, Intel D865 GBF, 256 MB DDR RAM, 80 GB HDD and Windows XP Pro with SP1 based home system. My problem is that when I change the settings of a folder, they are not saved on shutdown and on restarting revert to the earlier settings. For example, if I change the way the icons in a folder are arranged (by date, size, etc.) or if I change from thumbnail view to "details" view then on shutdown none of these settings are saved and when I start the PC again the folder switches back to the previous settings. I have verified that the "Remember each folder's view setting" under Folder Options>View is checked. My user account has administrator rights.
