Default urgent help

My friend has a p3 1ghz config. He is facing some weird problems offlate. Before windows loads up, he is getting the following messages on the dos screen. "checksum error" " Warning!your CPU speed has been changed.Set the speed, save and exit." He continues booting the system hitting F1 nevertheless and nothing seems to add up. Any suggestions are welcomed.

Motherboard battery is dead. Put a new battery and then configure the settings in the BIOS. The error won't come again.

As he said that he has got a PIII 1 GHz so it must be quite old now. And so the more chances are that the battery is dead. And anyway that's the cheaper solution to diagnose and try.
