Default CONNECTING IN SINGLE ATTEMPT

I am having dialup connection,whenever i try to connect, it will not connect in single attempt.However,my friends who are having the connection from same ISP, are not facing such a problem.

I tried reducing modem speeds,and installed correct drivers,
But the problem persists.

system config;

p4,intel 845gv mainboard,40gb HDD,128MB RAM,win98se

with smartlink 1900 voice/data/fax internal modem.

thank u in advance.

I'm not familiar with the Smartlink 1900, but the problem could be in the design of the card itself.

When lightning damaged my external modem a few months ago, I rummaged among my collection of unused computer cards and found three internal modems - a Frontech, a Motorola and a Dax. I tried them all and they behaved differently from one another.

The Frontech is OK when it runs, but often reports excessive line current from the phone line and refuses to continue. The Dax connects easily and runs fine, but seldom connects above 33k. The Motorola consistently connects at 54.6k but sometimes needs two or more (sometimes half a dozen) attempts to connect.

I tried all kinds of settings and tweaks but there was no significant change in the behaviour of each modem.

I have not used a D-Link for quite some time and can't comment on its performance right now, but I'm expecting a new shipment in a few days that will include a D-Link internal modem. I expect that it will also exhibit some difference in behaviour from the other three.
