Default SYSTEM Slowdown querry...

Hey guys,i recently formatted my 40 GB HDD and partitioned it with 3 drived C (11.7 GB), D (11.7 GB) and E (13.8 GB) and installed a fresh copy of WIN XP PROFESSIONAL on the C:drive.

Now my querry is tat :- If i install MS OFFICE 2000 on C:drive itself..will it make my system slow (like in starting up or shutting down)?? and Shud i install MS OFFICE onto another drive like D or E??

Coz previously wen my system was running,i had installed MS OFFICE 2000 onto my C:drive and it too hell of a time for the system to statup or shutdown... (i dnt knw if this is the fault of MS OFFICE being installed on C: drive or sum other fault ). Also all my games were installed onto E:drive. So i came up with this thread..

As of now i hv no MS OFFICE 2000 installed onto my system but i hv NAV 2005 and NIS 2004 installed (on C:drive) and the system is starting and shutting down preety fast and normally.

I plan to install games onto my E:drive...

I hv a 256 MB DDR(266) Hynix RAM on an Original INTEL D865 GBF mobo with 40 GB HDD with WIN XP PROFESSIONAL (Pirated version so obviously no SP2 can be installed)

Suggestion required guys !! as im in a Dilema...

If u guys require any other info..i will provide u with the same..

Cheers n e-peace....

YOU MUST B JOKIN'!!!!

SYSTEM WORKIN' FAST WITH NORTON INSTALLED.

Man, first of all, i'll say better use any other AV such as McAfee...

In case of games, yeah it would b better to install 'em on E: Drive nothin' wrong here. Better don't install 'em on C:

Now for Office, u can install it on C: no problem here.

Listen, the slowdown of a system hav various reasons such as you might hav too many programs to run at start - up.

amnt of RAM may b very less, proccy may b slow. there r several reasons for slow down not any particular.

If u don't mind then plz provide mor specifications of ur system. It would b helpful.

PS: even if u feel dat after installin office on C: has slowered ur system, u can simply uninstall it n install on D:

But i'll recommend dat u shud not install games on ur C:

go ahead and install office in C drive. u ll see that windows ll take more time to boot. u simply remove ms office from startup and windows ll boot as usual. start>run..type msconfig....hit enter...and remove ms office.

also make sure that ur pc is free from spywares...that slows down ur pc.

I'm pretty much sure that your system slowdown had nothing to do with M$ Office being installed in C: drive.
Your system could have slowed down because of presence of M$ Office in startup ( but I highly doubt it ) or because of spywares or other reasons. But installing OFfice in C: or D: or E: drive wont make a penny of difference in system startup/shutdown.

That's a good idea, not simply b'coz of free-space problem in C: drive usually confronted .. but also b'coz many games can run by copy pasting the whole folder. So, when you reinstall your system again ( in C: drive ) you may not have to reinstall the game.

Hey thanx alot guys..Incredible, rohanbee, Generic and alib_i thanx for ur responses. Well yes i will make sure tat during startup i reduce the amount of resources from un necessary starting up and making my system slow down. Also i will install MS OFFICE 2000 on D:drive

I hv an updated version of Lavasoft's Adware 1.06 and Spybot S&D 1.4 and i frequently check my system for Spywares and update the definitions as well.

Well Buddy i am not using any other paid Antivirus as my NAV 2005 is a pirated version and it has a crak wich wen installed, makes my NAV 2005 valid for 1 year.. (but tat is a different story.. )

And yes even i was surprised myself that my system was running preety fast even thou i installed NAV and other Norton related products..

Neways thanx for all ur replies guys..!!

And yes i will install all my games onto my E: drive..

I hv also noticed tat wen ever i run "msconfig" and remove unwanted programs from startup like MSN and Y! msngr, and choose SELECTIVE STARTUP ,I always keep geting the SYSTEM CONFIGURATION UTILITY wenever my system starts dnt knw how to fix this up.. plz help

Also since i hv not installed MS OFFICE onto my system, there is a folder in START>ALL PROGRAMS menu having a folder named as STARTUP so if i install MS OFFICE onto my system, the STARTUP folder will obviously show the MS OFFICE in it,so shud i delete the MS OFFICE from the STARTUP folder by right clicking it or shud i disable MS OFFICE from the msconfig command ??

Cheers n e-peace...

That shortcut you've pointed out is a link to a file called OSA.EXE ( More Info ). Now, this file allows M$ Office programs to start faster. Hence if you regularly use Office programs, then it's better that you keep the shortcut in that statup menu.

Or else you can take a backup of the shortcut, then delete it and see the difference it makes. If the difference is not large then I prefer keep the file there, as it will help me in starting Office programs faster, which is a good thing for me.

I hope you understand my point.

I dont say McAfee is gr8 instead I'm saying use an AV like it. U know when i bought my computer, NAV was installed but it used to hang my system frequently and at dat time i had 256 MB RAM but now I'm having 128MB RAM n switched to McAfee n my system hasn't yet hanged even once, even thought i hav moved from 98 to XP.

Also, Norton updates took lot of time and bandwidth while McAfee don't.

Well u can get NOD32, its even recommended by DIGIT!

hey thanx for ur suggestion alib_i , i will try out this...One more thing, as far as i knw MS OFFICE or any other office utilities they get started up wen the system starts and eat up all those resources at the startup itself and make the system slow RITE ??

So i think i shud disable the MS OFFICE option from the msconfig itself.. But i hv noticed tat I hv also noticed tat wen ever i run "msconfig" and remove unwanted programs from startup like MSN and Y! msngr, and choose SELECTIVE STARTUP ,I always keep geting the SYSTEM CONFIGURATION UTILITY wenever my system starts dnt knw how to fix this up.. plz help
