Mp3, Mp3 all the way. I love it. Great quality, less space and morover, no problems associated with it + all Mp3 devices support it. BTW, Is there any format called "mp4"? mp3 is also supported by all players, so even If I find a better software than Winamp, I'll have no probs.

Where is the option for FLAC (loseless, best quality) and Real media (smallest in size)?

Mostly MP3.

Some website gives the option of downloading the same songs in MP3 format and also Real media. In such cases which one we should prefer? The important parameters being (1) Size of the download (2) Music quality.

I prefer MP3 as it has extremely good and clear sound quality and its a well known standard.

But I use RM and WMA too.

MP4 is out but it is not as popular as MP3 due the vast compatibility of MP3.

mp4 provides same quality as mp3 but at lower bitrates, due to higher compression while still maintaining good quality

the best & legal way to convert mp3 to mp4 is with itunes, only if U chose not to DRM Protect it, so that it can be played in other media players

other methods are

1) Nero Digital : Convert from mp3 to Nero Digital mp4 with Nero CD burner
2) Quicktime Pro mp3->wave->mp4

it is said that a 64 kbps MP4 provides quality comparable to a 128 kbps mp3, although this is subjective, for me 96 kbps provides quality like a 128 kbps mp3, although I use 128 Kbps which provides quality comparable to 192 kbps mp3

AAC gives me the best quality, but I have to write audio CDs only through winamp. Also, my car audio doesn't play AAC so I'm stuck with Mp3's..

But for all my pc listening purposes, AAC at 320kbps
