When you boot into Win XP, right click on "My Computer" & select "properties".
Then onto the "Advanced" Tab, & click on the "settings" button under "Startup & Recovery".
There you can see a pull down menu which shows your default OS.
Set it to Windows XP & click OK.

Go to command prompt ( in XP, I'm not sure if it works the same in 98 )
Type "bootcfg"
It will list the entries in boot.ini file with their ID no.
Now if WinXP shows up in ID 1
type "bootcfg /default /ID1" in commd prompt
or if WinXP has ID 2
then type "bootcfg /default /ID2"
