Your computer will most probably accept SD ram. download CPU Z from http://www.cpuid.com and check the memory tab for information about your current RAM. And definately, the performance will improve when adding extra memory!

While adding extra memory will improve the performance, there is generally a trend of diminishing returns after a particular point. The reason is that there are many parameters such as the processor speed, the processor cache, the memory (speed and amount), etc. which affect the overall speed of the computer. After one point, your memory will not be a bottleneck - the processor and other components will, and adding more memory wont improve the performance by much.
Considering that your computer has a 1 GHz processor, I dont think that anything more than 256 MB RAM will improve the performance by much. You just have to keep this in mind - what was the amount of memory that was considered to be adequate when your computer's processor was new...
If someone with 1 GHz processor recommends 512 MB RAM or more, take their advice because they know first hand...
Hope this helps,
Arun

Will boost ur performance to some extent..
It depends upon the type of applications you use.
I think Hynix RAM will be a cost-effective solution.

RAM from Hyniz is ofcourse a good choice.
With PIII 1 GHz, 256 MB RAM seems to be enough, but incase if you are using such very memory hungry software like Photoshop or some other multimedia products, you can go for 512MB. Mind you, its not necessary that your system will be able to reap the benifit of the high memory you supply it with. It depends on many factors.
Incase if you are in a habit of working with many softwares at the same time, with all softwares active, it is only then you will need something above 256MB. Else you will soon discover that you wasted your money on something that is of no use.
No doubt RAM increases system performance to some extent.

Go for Hynix RAM. It also prevents from blue screens but remember to buy da RAM of same frequency as of ur previous RAM if installing two rams.
if replacing old one. opt for da highest frequency supported by ur mobo.

I don't think there is much relation between 1 GHz processor and 256MB being the optimal RAM size. What is more important is what version is your OS and what apps ur running. WinXP alone takes about 400MB to 450MB RAM considering a decent AV and 3rd party firewall being installed, and hence, installing at least 512MB RAM will reduce the pagefaults thus increasing the system performance. If ur into photoshop or 3D modelling, then u need at least 1 GB, otherwise ur HDD will be thrashed.
