Yes u can do that.

remove the cd drive, make your old hdd slave by changing the jumper to SL mode, connect it to the IDE cable, connect the power cable.

switch on your pc. press 'del' key to enter setup, go to hdd configurations and chk if the old hdd is detected.

save settings and restart.

depending on your partitions the drives shows up in the windows explorer.

the drive names will be different ( like c:,d: etc) frm ur old system.

u can chk ur old hdd partitions by its label ( like d:backup, e:software etc)

forget what he said
if ur makin the hdd slave u dun need to detach ur cd drive

ok now if u see a hard disk u'll see 2 connectors at the back
one big flat one .. which is called an ide cable
and the other with a plastic plug going in ..
thats the molex connector .. and its for power

now the ide cable
one end will be attatched to ur hdd
the other to ur motherboard

somewhere in the middle .. there will be another connector which is free
now that u need to connect to ur old hard disk ..
it'll go in only one way so dun worry
also ull have to find one more empty white plug or milex connector .. cuz u need to power ur hdd ..
attatch it where it goes ...

now one more small thing ..
ull notice between the ide cable connector and molex hole on the hard disk ... there are some pins dug inside ... 6/8 i forgot
and 2 of them will be covered by some thing thats plastic
tihs is called the jumper ...
and it shorts the 2 pins
typically it goes vertically and shorts the pins vertically
the placement is called as a jumper setting
there are settings to set it as slave or master or in cable select mode

this will be on a label on one side of ur hard disk
it'll have a picture of these pins , and will show the setting for each "mode"
see the setting for "slave"
and remove the plastic jumper and reput it in "slave" setting
make sure u put it in the right place ... check the diagram properly before puttin the jumper in

now boot ur pc .. and ur old hdd should also be detected
goto my computer and u'll typically see it as D: ( d drive )

hey raven
i didn get data tsfrd from one of the drives
without any problems watsoever...
however the other old hdd from which i want to tsfr data was the master on the old PC
which means i need to make it the slave when i connect it to my new pc.... but i am just not able to change the jumper settings.... its a seagate and there are 8 pins..
thre's this thing (the jumper i guess) around the first couple of pins which according to the instructions on the hdd is at master setting...
so to make it to salev i need to ensure that it dosent have anything around any of the pins....

how can i change this .. i can't fig it out ...
i tried taking pics of it but cldnt get it clear enuff..
i hope i explained it properly..
thanks for your help again

just remove the jumper
u can use a pari of tweezers
its just a lil palstic thing that comes off easily ...

basically i guess for the salve setting all pins need to be free and seen right ?
so just remove the jumper/(s) out using ur nails or a tweezer like i said

that shouldnt happen
in ur bios check 2 things
i dunno which bios it is so i cant tlel u where ull find it

one .. check ur primary master and slave and secondary master n slave
primary master should be ur new disk and secondary master ur old disk ..
that is if uve connected the old disk to the same cable as ur new hard disk
and secondary master will be ur cd rom drive. .

next check for boot sequence
check 1st second and third boot device
u can safely keep 1st as cdrom
and keep the second as hdd0 !
neither of them should have hdd1 in the option !
3rd boot device select as floppy or lan .. doesnt matter

see if it helps ..
are u sure abt the jumper setting tho ?
and i guess the comp boots when u remove the old hdd ?

ok here's wats happening
in the bios
IDE-Primary master : st3160021a
IDE Primary slave : none
then it lists my cd rom as secondary master
and secondary slave as none

the old hdd is attached to the cable going from the new hdd to the motherboard...

now in the bios in the sub menu for ide primary slave
i had..
Ide primary slave :auto
Access mode :auto
press enter to auto detect

when i press enter it is not able to detect anything...
while when i go to the sub menu for IDE primary master... it shows capacity and the other data...

i am thinking cld it be that its not getting power
the interesting thing is that
the old HDD has a cable attached with the molex connector going in to give it power...
now that cable just dosent come out .. like it does on my new hdd... and instead it has two mroe connectore at the other end.. (like molex connectors only... one of them has pins while the other has the holes for the pins )... i connected to the one with pins to a power cable which was hanging spare in my smps ...

i had connected another drive to the same hangin cable in the smps and it worked great ..
i hope i am explaining everything properly...
i am just not able to do this man
this sux

i dun think i got that ..
basically i guess ur new drive is being detected and old one isnt
this could be either cuz the jumper settin is wrong
or its not gettin power from the molex connecto
or the middle part of the ide cable isnt connected to it properly

the ide cable connected to ur new hard disk going to ur mobo should have a free connector in the middle somewhere .
dont disconnect the new and connect the old just in case ur doing that

also if its possible it goes on the other way .. try reversing the connector to the old hdd... that is connect it upside down IF it connects that way ..
i hope u get what im saying
cuz some ide connectors dont have the notch and can go in either way ..
so try connectin it upside down if its possible

make sure ALL ur devices are connected to a molex connector for power and that the connection is secure

raven i am doing exactly what ur saying
ditto
and i fig the jumper part...

i am curious .. the molex connector frm my old
hdd dosent come out .. i dont remember if it was always this way or if it ever came out ...
were there hdd's with fixed molex connectors...

coz earlier the hdd gave me bootup problems
now it dosent .. but it dosent get detected either.....

cant fig out ...
ill maybe post a pic of this molex connector that i am talking about...

hdds with built in molex ?
no ..
never

hdds have te 4 pins where the molex "female" connector will go
the molex with 4 holes is called the female connector that that is comin from a wire from ur PSU ..
this will go into the old hdd

if u can take a snap of ur old hdd with this "built in molex connector" it would be helpful
