Default Computer stalls

Recently my pc started behaving abnormally. During anything it stalls including the mouse and never responds to any command. This persists for a minute or two and normal post recovery session. What may be the problem
My machine....P4 2.4,XP Home SP2 with all updates, 256 MB DDRRD RAM.
Please help.

Might be a problem with the lan card . TI faced the same problem but my pc used to stall for 3-4 second . the trouble turned out to be faulty LAN card
