Default HDD recovery+chennai

I heard some screetching noice from my HDD & I'm not able to access the data in it(though the HDD is getting detected)

It's a 5 years old Segate 17.2 GB HDD.

The HDD contains some important docs/files & my fav mp3s

How can I recover them?

Any place in Chennai where I can give my HDD to recover data?

or is there any way to recover data on my own?

I heard that it would cost around Rs.700-800 ro recover but I don't know where it is done in Chennai?

try booting ur system in DOS and see if u can access ur files there

then jus copy em onto another drive or a floppy if its small or something

just talk to any computer shop in chennai they should do it for you

does ur operating system load on it properly ? or are you not able 2 use dat pc at all ? or does ur pc have 2 HDDs and ur O/S is on another HDD?

how many partitios does it have ? are all of them spoilt ?

which os do u use?

pls giv all these details also

hav u got enough knowledge to open ur CPU and check if the HDD is attached properly ? if so, do that.

That HDD is my secondary HDD.So I don't have any problem in booting.

The connections are fine. The prob is with the HDD itself.
Since I heard scratching breaking noices,I removed that HDD out & I have wrapped it in a plastic cover & kept it in my cupboard.

and

How do I respart in MS Dos mode in Windows XP?

The problem is that that HDD might be physically damaged..it is getting detected but can't be accessed..i.e when my comp starts it is detected as primary slave.

go to windows explorer
right click on flopy
click on format
select "Creat Ms-Dos startup disk"

this will make a boot floppy

or u can use these two
1)use nero to create a bootable cd
2)use your windows xp pro setup cd and use its recovery console

However its better to get it to the computer shop because you might loose your data by trying to recover it

Thanks
Regards..
