Default Remote Desktop Error

I was wanting to connect to my friends computer the other day using the Remote Desktop Connection Provided by Windows XP Pro.

When I asked hime for his IP address he gave me 2,

1. This one was from the Local Area Connection Status box that appears when we click the icon in the tray it was 172.xxx.xxx.xxx.

2. The second was from w*w.whatismyip.com. which was something like 202.xxx.xxx.xxx

I performed a whois search on both of them . The 1st IP resulted as a Local Area Network address whereas the second one was the actual IP ued to connect to the internet.

Using either of them I was unable to connect to his comp. He had disabled all the firewalls installed and had even checked the button in Mycomp -> properties.

The error,

Please help thanks .

1) could be he hasnt enabled remote desktop
2) could be either of ur isp's is blockin remote desktop port
3) he is behind NAT so multiple ppl maybe using that same 202.x.x.x ip address
hence u cant connect to the particular person
rules would have to be defined in his ISP's router

try a VPN network instead of RDC

I did not understand this line.

Also how will VPN netword connect to his computer. Do we both need to have it installed on our respective PC's.

I hope it will not ask for the IP address .

yeah it will i guess
so vpn will be out too
u can give it a shot
nat is the concept of hiding behind an ip adress with a local ip address
172.x.x.x is private and 202.x.x.x is a public ip address
the private ip translates to the public ip address when it accesses the net ..
that one public ip can be used by many private ip's
this in short is the concept of NAT ( Network Address Translation )
and it causes a lot of problems when tryin to directly connect to the IP
thats y u cant create a direct connection thru rdc

VPN wont do good for such a setup which even isnt a SOHO setup.Plus a VPN setup consists of atleast a VPN server & a VPN client software to the bare minimum.

To shed some light can you give us a few details of how your friends & your network is setup? Like if any routers placed at his end of connection?
If yes then one alternative would be port forwarding the RDC ports to the internal computer which you want to access remotely.

Thanks,

See I cant shed much light as I not much into networking.

I shall try,

Both of us use the computers to surf the internet and we stay polls apart but in the same city.

He and I both have a broadband internet connections.

His comp is directly connected to the internet via a LAN card . There are no routers at his house.

Mine is connected via a modem no routers .

His comp shows 2 different IP's as I said above ( 172.xxx.xxx.xxx and 202.xxx.xxx.xxx)

This is all I can help you with. However if you ask me certain questions I shall be able to provide the answers.

Yes thats correct raven. The ISP blocking ports is a factor to be considered here in which case you are helpless.
Other than that you could try VNC such as Tight VNC or any other VNC client/server software & try it with non-default ports.

thats cuz probably that port is blocked too
lol
man ur in a fix
do this
get this software called lanportscan
and enter ur PUBLIC ip address and not private if u have one
that is if u have an ip of 10.x.x.x or 172.x.x.x or 192.x.x.x on ur system THAT WONT DO
get ur real ip and enter it in the software and scan for all ports
ports range from 1-1023 which are reserved
and 1024 - 65535

when it reports a port as OPEN try using that port in realVNC
try a couple of ports

if u use torrents and they work , then shutdown ur torrent software and try port 6881 ! see if that works

Thanks theraven ,

Actually it is he who is in a fix and not me

Anyway, I shall tell him to download the software and run it. Also when you say public ip, do you mean the ip that is displayed when he runs w*ww.whatismyip.com.

If this is the IP, he shall run it and get the ports which he should feed in to RealVNC and that will the solve the problem , I hope.

Anyway , thanks a lot for your time, effort and advice .

I shall keep you posted about the result.

Regards
