encrypting folder
I want to to know whether there is any way to encrypt the folder without using any software.

if u have NTFS, u can do so...
Right clik on the fol/fil u wanna encryp and clik on Advanced > check the box "Encrypt contents to secure data" and voila ! ur done ,...
But i dunno how it can be reused on other comps i.e. i dunno how to assign private/public keys...

what does encrypting folder means? is it that making a folder password protected ?

yes, kinda... but it has a key instead of a password.
the comp that has the same key can open ur file...
i think its somethin like this...
try a wiki on it...

well, u asked for encrypting 1st and so was my answer...
Srry if it confused...
Well, u can use a zip tool (windows too has it) to password protect and compress ur folders...
I think this is a nessecity s/w all have so it shud be no problem...
