VMWare Workstation 5 Problems

Guys!
Today I installed it.
I'm a new user of this s/w.
Never used it.

I installed it, hoping that it'll allow me to start ne existing OS installed on my comp without starting the comp.
I mean, I want to know does it allow to start ne installed OS or it allows only installing OS?

I hv Windows 98, Xp and SUSE linux installed on my comp.
I want to start Windows 98 or SUSE linux in windows XP with this s/w.
Is it possible?

i have done both in v4

if you want to boot an existing os of harddisk it comes in advanced portion of manual ,
read the manual in vmware
or check its forum

Can u tell step by step?
I mean where is the option to boot into existing installed OS?

I dont think you can boot into existing installed OS. you can install any OS from any other OS using VMWare. I've done that and i usually loads live Cds using VMWare, so that i can do it without a reboot. All you have to do is Add a new Virtual machine, select an OS from the list, provide the bootable CD of that OS, Install it, and Boot into it. There will be a performance degradation, but ofcourse if you have a lot of ram, you gonna enjoy it.

Do u mean the exisiting VMware installation or the main system files ?

to load the exisiting vmware installtion files --go to file-open-borwse the vm config file

Guys!
I found the way to boot into existing Installed OS.
I successfully booted into windows 98 under windows XP.
I got the solution from Help file of VMware...

One more thing!
I want to know that if i booted into windows 98 or linux under windows XP using this s/w.
And made changes to that OS, will those changes be made in real time too?
I mean if i deleted a file or made ne change in windows 98 using this s/w, will that file be deleted actually in real time too or its virtual?

one can but because it is dangerous so it not shown in normal configuration

everything will be in realtime and will be permanent
if you don't want that Use Snapshots

OK.
Here we go...

1.) Open VMWare Workstation.
2.) Goto: File -> New -> Virtual Machine.
3.) Wizard will open, click on Next.
4.) Select Custom from Virtual Machine Configuration and click on Next.
5.) It'll ask Virtual Machine Format, leave it as it is and click on Next.
6.) It'll ask for Guest Operation System, select which u want to boot and its version too and click on Next.
7.) Now it'll ask for Name and Location, leave as it is and click on Next.
8.) Then it'll ask for No. of Processors, leave as it is and click on Next.
9.) Then it'll ask for Memory amount, after selecting ur desired memory amount click on Next (I selected 52 MB).
10.) Now it'll ask for Network Connection, leave as it is and click on Next. (I selected Do not use a network connection).
11.) Now it'll ask for I/o Adapter Types, leave as it is and click on Next.
12.) Now it'll ask for Disk, now the main point comes, here we hv to select Use a physical disk (for advanced users) and click on Next. It'll WARN u, simply click on OK.
13.) Then it'll ask for Device, leave as it is and click on Next.
14.) Then it'll ask for Disk File, leave as it is and click on Finish.

Thats it.
Now u can start ur Virtual Machine.

PS: It was for my version 5. Options may be differ in older versions...
