Can you tell us your network topology? Is there a appliance router in place? If yes then which brand & model.The last I know most routers wired/wireless come with content filtering & blocking options which can be highly customised.
The most important part is you dont have to run anything on any host on the network.Less load on your host pc's & that too completely FREE !

If the above isnt in your list then you may as well use a free/commercial solution which sits at the border host & blocks url's which are in its database or url's that have been configured to block.

Not very effective. Most porn sites have tame names.

I would recommend Parental Filter (freeware) and BlockXXX extension for FireFox. But both wouldn't suite the original posters demands. Great software though. I use PF in full stealth mode to prevent users from browsing porn when I'm not around. Great if you want to keep you PC free of Trojans and other Malware.

hmm basically its a workgroup network... earlier when cafe was on CDMA/ISDN conection then we used to have C1 (192.168.0.1) as server or the internet getway... other computers, as C2, C3, ..... connects to the C1 via a switch therefor access the internet...

now days at the age of BB... we went for BSNL BB... so currenly running a 512KBPS MU.....

now as it is a MU account we followed this guide to install the connection.... so C1 iis no longer the getway...

as the ADSL modem directly goes to the switch.... and every computer has a signed IP, as C1 (192.168.1.10) C2 (192.168.1.XX) and so no... the default getway has been set to 192.168.1.1.... so pretty simple... (too simple as it made me surprise... as there is no need to dial my BB ID or password... we turn on the modem & thats it systems r connected)... so really have to think about a software running on every host....

hope i am clear with my set up....

@exx_2000

sorrry mate i think ur link is suggestion to put up a proxy.... hmm messenger services will b down if i put the network on a proxy....

Well now that your setup is clear for me,I'll pass on what I forsee,but before that let me make myself crystal clear,I've have no prior experience with content filtering programs.

Since a content/url filtering program would either be a standalone program to be installed onto the gateway machine or multiple programs to be installed on each host.
For your topology all hosts communicate directly with the modem/router there is no way you can have a "server" & monitor,configure content filtering at this level.

The "server" machine would hold no rights as all information to the internet is directly forwarded to the router which takes the packets further ahead.

So as far as I can see you need a suite of programs which would sit on each host,configured with no central control which IMHO becomes a very lame setup since the users can with little information close down the host application & thus bypass content/url filtering.
If someone who has used can recommend such a program you may as well have a look.At the top of my head I cant find any.

If anyone out there disagres on this then please let me know.
