Yeah why not .
use chopper xp provided on digits DVD (about 2 or three months back).
then convert the .vob file to another format like .dat .mpg etc through easy dvdtovcdconverter .
then u r free to burn the file on a cd as a vcd but the dvd file will have to be split up as i dont think much compression can be achieved.

U can burn a MINI DVD, just split the DVD files u have into 700 MB chunks using DVD Shrink. Then burn it as a MINI DVD in Nero. Then when u enter this CD in a CD drive, it will recognise the CD as a DVD! This way u can have full quality DVD audio and video with subtitles! But the only problem is, it requires 5-6 CDs for a single DVD and u have to keep on changing disks! Hehe..

And these CDs also work on DVD players!

This is actually more trouble than it is worth. It might look easy but when you go to cut it the files end up as 700 megs or 800 megs or 600 megs, Have to try 5 times to get even close to the correct size. And then you have the problem of making sure all the vob's have the proper header info. Some players will play it no matter what and some wont. And trying to piece them back is even harder.

Another thing is, for DVD the audio has to be AC3. For SVCD it has to be MP3 or was it MP2 like VCD. So even just converting the VOB to MPG is not simple. SVCD's are recognized by all DVD players but some DVD players wont see DVD files written onto a CD.

Do a lot of research first before getting into this so you dont have trouble later on.

I dont think so! In DVD shrink, there is an option to specify the file size and mine always comes to 698 or 699 MB! So thats not a problem!

The best method is to use Chopper-XP.It gives you the exact file size before chopping vob's.
You can then write the vob files as they are only if you intend to watch movie on your PC.

If you want to create a VCD then you can make parts of vob files by time.Make sure the time length of the chopped part is always less than 80 min. Keep it 74 min to be on the safe side. Now convert this vob into mpg using any software you feel like.

You can use Imtoo DVD ripper to convert vob into mpg, although it is a paid software but i know you can get it for free ( I hope you know what i'm talking about ).

Happy writing.

That's illegal, and don't suppose it works with data dvds. Or does it?

No it does not work with data DVDs anyway! Only for DVD video.
