Default liteon drive problem

hi,

I have this liteon combo SOHC-5232K(digit upgrade to dvd offer). It was working fine until last few weeks, before I full erased a CD RW. Now the drive is not being recognised as a CD writer by Windows XP / Roxio Easy CD and DVD Creator 6. Now every 1 of 4 cd being burnt gets damaged.

The error is that the cd writing begins, the orange light is seen and nothing happens. I'm forced to rest the computer and then the cd is ejected. Though the cd is recognised as completely blank, I'm unable to write on it. However the cd works fine at a friend's cd writer (samsung).
There is no problem in reading any kind of cds whatsoever.

I have tried installing the drive at a friend's placebut got same error. I have also tried using Nero/Roxio/Win XP to write on cds of different brands but in vain. I have also installed SP2 but it also didn't solve my problem.

Please tell me what to do, wether it is a hardware fault or software. I've heard that flashing the firmware can solve many problems at home. how can I do it? Will it void the warranty? Is there some way I can solve the problem without sending it to the service center
