start my own sms server

how to start my own sms server of course free ones

so that ppl typing a text and sending a message and they get the requested ringtones

i will upload the ringtones in the server

anyone who knows ?

Just to give you a basic idea, it would involve sending the text message as an email to the destination service provider with a format like this 9886084866@hutch_whatever_.com

As you can see, this would work only for those service providers who provide sms via email service.

A CGI/Perl script will need to be written to take care of the emailing part and the text input can be taken using a simple PHP script.

[edit] sorry, by sms server, i thought you meant sending sms to another mobile. Not sure about sending/requesting ringtones.

For sms server you need a dedicated server first and it is not as easy as you are thinking..

first you need to install sms gateway...

there is an open source software called Kannel, so you need to get it working first and then you need to finish up some legal formalities (which may include some heavy fees to get number where users can send SMS and you can send SMS to users of different companies i.e. hutch, bpl, tata etc..)

so this whole process will need an experienced person to carry these kind of operations including installation, implementation etc...

And therw will be HUGE cost involved in this....(may be more than 20K a month or so)

It involves lot of things. You will need to setup your own gateway which will get/send messages from cellular operators smsc (SMS Centre). For communicating with different cellular operators you will need to talk to them so that they can redirect the messages to your gateway and in your gateway will need to be bind to the operators smsc so that it can get/send messages.

well it will be good if onli for knowledge sake,if aneone knws the exact way to go about settin up an sms server...cuz out there on the net there is a lot of material on his thin and i am sur some1 must be knowin bout it...

I do not have the exact idea about it but cooltarun and me, we both have tried to give rough idea about whole process...

hmm making profit is total different aspect...that needs impressive marketing and other various factors like planning, management etc...

so if you are able to manage everything properly then no one can stop you from making profit

hmm about profit...it is difficult to say without knowing the expenses and setup but if you were yahoo or rediff then i would have said...if you charge Rs.10 for ringtone, you can make around Rs.8 as profilt
