Default Regarding 6600GT and PSU

Hi,

I am new to these forums and wanted some help from you experts. Actually I have a old machine (an XFX GF5200 128MB AGP8X with a Asrock P4i45GV motherboard and a 300W SMPS). Don't ask about the mobo, some dumb hardware vendor sold me this when I did not have the fundas regarding the same.

I want to upgrade to a 6600GT AGP version. I am confused as to what brand I shall go to (Asus, Leadtek, Gainward, XFX, etc). Pls suggest a brand, I personally prefer the Asus as I saw in it's site that it has a clock speed of around 1.1Ghz while others have somewhat less.

Secondly, will I need a new PSU of higher wattage if I want to install the same and will my motherboard support this card? My present system specs are:

P4 1.7Ghz, 512MB DDR 266Mhz Ram, 80GB HDD, XFX Geforce FX 5200 128MB.

It would be also helpful if you can qoute the price of the same and also the price of the Radeon X800XL AGP version. Although I have heard that it is very expensive, I came to know from cnet.com that it offers the best value for money. Someday when I get a new system then I might get it too.

Thanks very much in advance.

Check this thread..

This should solve at least one of your problems.

Regarding PSU, it is better you go for a 400W or still better 500W.

Surely 6600 AGP will work with your current configuration.

Thanx, I mainly wanted to upgrade as I did not get any acceptable frame rates at over 640*480 in doom3 and over 800*600 in Farcry at low settings. I also got around 30fps in HL2 at 1024*768 at low settings. My 3dMark03 score was 902 which, compared to scores of the other members of this forum was too low.

By the way, do you think that after I upgrade and get a BSNL 256Kbps broadband connection I can play BF2? Or is 512Kbps a minimum requirement for BF2? We are still lagging behind in broadband, I heard that people abroad (read US) can download 300MB in around half an hour. When will the government and BSNL wake up?

Regards,

AGP version of 6600GT needs extra power. So check if you have a spare molex connector (like the ones connected to hard disk and optical drive).

PSU wattage doesn't make a difference. See that you PSU gives atleast 14 Ampere on the 12 Volt rail. Check the rating table stuck on your current PSU.

Also, you're system is underpowered and 6600GT won't function to it's full potential due to this bottleneck. Buy a Radeon 9600XT to 9800 Pro, or a Geforce 5700 to 5900. In both cases stay away from SE's or LE's.

Yeah .. rite .... but why a 5700 or a 9600 ??? why not a 6600nonGT ?????

Anyway .. u really need a good conn. to play bf2 over the net ... with a 256kbps conn. u'll just manage fair gameplay on a 16man server ....

Well. thanks to specially deathvirus_me and cybershastri, I think I have to buy a new machine with a new config. This old machine will not be able to play the latest games, as far as I can understand...Maybe when the price of the X800 XL PCIex comes down a bit, I will go for the new config. As for now, the 6600 non GT will be perfect with my config, I agree with deathvirus to an extent. But what about the 6800 non ultra, non GT? Check this link, it's interesting...(I think you all have already seen it)...

Default hi

for playing at higher res you might need to consider buying faster cpu and 512mb-2gb ram depending upon game , consider 1gb
try to get amd 64bit (preferably 3700 sand deiog or atleast 3200venice etc)

with 1.7ghz what use is 6600gt

cosider 6600non gt that too might overpower
