Default cannot attach a new hard drive with an existing one

I have a compaq presario with P-IV 1.9 Ghz 256 MB RAM running win XP.
whenever I try to attach another hard drive , it first asks to save changes (when I restart) and then a message appears "Non system disk error".
The PC doesn't boot till I remove the hard drive.

The jumper settings are printed on the cover which is on the top of the HDD....

set ur jumper accordingly so that HDD becomes a slave... then connect it to your computer
