i have heard that a whole film can be compressed into a cd with this format, is it true.If yes, please tell me the softwares that can be used. I would prefer freewares.

Use Dr.DivX to do it.Go to http://www.divx.com.
It is true, but it can't play on your VCD Players, can play only on comp.

search the forum for this
sheesh
anyways dat is a vcd file
means it came from A CD ... as in ONE cd
so i guess u mean u want the whole 2 cd on 1 cd right ?
well anyways ... first ull need to merge the files
then u can convert them to divx using dr. divx .. or many other softwares available
and ywah like bharat said u can play it in normal players. .. not even dvd players
so its pretty useless unless u wanna give it to someone ...
and then too its easier to make copies of the 2 cds

Umm, rather than joinin the dat and then converting, make two avis and join them, I somehow feel avi's join faster.
A dat is a mpg, so u need a mpg to avi program.
Virtual dub is pretty good.

Dr DivX does offer good compression but somehow increases the brightness and the grains of the picture

the quality does get affected in divx
but it shud not be very disturbing
in 'choose output' -> 'encode the divx video into'
choose 'high quality'
its also possible that your screen resolution is set at low values
just before encode, go to 'modify settings'
move the resize tab to max
that shud help

no .
Dr.DivX is bogus.
use 'VirtualDub' or 'flaskmpeg' with 'DivX' or 'Xvid' codec.
i think xvid is better than divx in quality and size.
see----
www.virtualdub.org
www.flaskmpeg.net
must see for compression help ok?
