External HDD fails to show the content....!!!

SOS........ My 120 gb HD has a lot of data..and it shows only one empty $recycle.bin (which is a system hidden file) but surprisingly it shows the 111 gb occupied (which is correct and the actual data content before it stopped showing the files/folders). Also i noticed few files which I know are present in the external HDD, when i try to copy them again in the disk it says do you want to replace!!!!!!! But still none of the files are visible. How to retrieve the data back???
Show hidden files, show system files is all chekced in my folder options........
PS: Last i used this HDD in one of my friends pc and some virus was detected there which was deleted by his antivirus.

I had a similar problem with an ext HDD. It usually happens when the HDD is forcibly disconnected. All i did was shut down the comp, attach the disk and restart. Then the comp performed a disk scan and all my folders were recovered!

Got my problem solved................ did a chkdisk and it recovered all the data........
