Theoretically 6800 Vanilla has 20% more memory bandwidth than 6600GT. Practically, they perform neck to neck. Some may say 6600GT is better. I can't say for sure as I haven't used 6800.
Wait. There's one major compelling reason to buy a 6800. If you're lucky, you can unlock the extra pipelines (softmod) in a plain vanilla and VOILA! you have a 6800GT. Now, that's free performance and who doesn't like free.
Remember, not all 6800's can be softmodded to unlock 16 pipelines. Some actually have defective pipelines, whereas others have perfect ones but have 4 disabled. Why? It's all about balancing manufacturing yields with market demands. So, if you get the second type, you're one lucky b*st*rd. Else, no probs. Just disable the softmod and you get what you pay for. Might lose a few extra bucks you payed over the 6600GT price.
I think it's a risk worth taking . I tried it with a PowerColor 9800SE (softmod to pro). Unfortunately I was among the unlucky 52%.

At stock for most games 6800 may be better but somtimes 6600gt may surely win.

If possible go for 6800GT. You can easily overclock it to 6800 Ultra levels.

The 6800 is a better bet any day even if it is a vanilla model................i own both now so i know. My 6800 mobile chip in a laptop still outperforms the 6600gt in my desktop!!

Go for X800XL. It's a great VFM card and it performs only 5-8% less than X800XT. It's better than 6800GT IMO.
