how to connect 2 computers

I am new to computers, I have two systems running win98 on both of them. I have ethernet card on both systems and a patch wire connected to both of them.
But i was unable to share the files between both systems, what is the procedure to connect two computers.

i also a hub with 5 ports, is there any solution to connect using patch wire.
