What is overclocking and how to do it..?

Hi guys,i heard this word overclocking in this forum and in pc reviews to shops,but could'nt figure it out,I want to know what is overclock means and how to overclock my cpu or graphics card..?

Thanks guys it helped me a lot...but guys can u tell me that is amd 790gx chipset motherboards r good for phenom 2 940 or nvidia 8300 chipset mobos. Some guys already suggested me 4 biostar Ta790gx mobo is this mobo good or shall I stick 2 asus or gigabyte.
