I will suggest a Nikon Coolpix 5200 (or 5600 now). I have it and its great. 2 other friends bought it after me and we all are satisfied with the DigiCam and the results.

Look pal, there are few things you need to ask yourself before hunting for a digicam:
intended use
That decides required MP and size of camera (Compact, Standard, SLR)
Frequency of use
That decides, type of battery.

Important things to look in a camera
Size: The smaller, the better. However if you are into some serious photography. then only go for SLRs, because u can't carry SLR everywhere.
MP : Idealy anything above 3 MP is good. I m myself using a 3.1MP camera.
Battery consumption: Olympus eats up battery like anything. Whereas Kodaks are very judicious while consuming battery.
Type of Lens: This decides the clarity of the picture and not merely higher megapixels.

I hope the above information is useful while making adecision.

I use: Kodak 7330
+ve (compact size, versatility, ease of use, good flash, low battery consumption and value for money)
-ve: Picture quality can be better

I advice: Canon
+ve (good flash, picture quality, simple to use, good lens)
-ve (slightly costly)

Happy Buying

It's always better to first checkout sample pics taken by various cameras while deciding for which one to buy.

Visit www.pbase.com/cameras to check sample pics taken by digicam users worldwide....

The Canon A75/85/95 are good cameras. I have the 3.2MP A75 and it is a nice, easy-to-use camera. The 85 has a 4MP and the 95 a 5MP resolution. Canon cameras are generally a good buy. Unfortunately, I don't have any idea of the prices of these cams in India. Nikon is also a great choice if you want digicams.

Nikon 5200 must be somewhere in between 10K to 13K in grey market. Memory card will be extra. Decide on the card as per your budget.

But take minimum 512 MB (about Rs. 2000). Lower capacity cards, will not let you record even a little longer videos at TV quality. 512 MB card records about 6 minutes video at TV quality. I have recorded a few 1 min clips of my new born daughters and I am sure they will enjoy it when they grow up

Whatever DigiCam you take, don't forget to take a memory card reader. Its far better than attaching the DigiCam to PC.

And a tripod will be sone pe suhaga I took a Vivitar VT 3600 for 1450. At full length, its more than 6 feet. Its light weight and folds to knee high length. Its pretty portable and comes with a bag. Velbon is expensive and doesn't even give a bag

If i am not wrong Coolpix 5200 is discontinued in India.... and is at discount outside..... look at the panasonic ones.. not sure if it will be in you budget but lok at panasonic FZ10....... i wanted zoom and this is the camera that gave me....... please do not look at digital zoom as it is useless.... and decide what you want a point and shoot camera or a something professional.... FZ10 is a fully automatic and if i am not wrong you can make it completly manual by setting exposure , focal length , manual focus and stuff....

5200 may be discontinued because newer models have come in. e.g. 5900.

Great that you are going for a 7 MP camera But why is there only little price difference between a 7 MP camera and a 5 MP camera? Are you compromising on features for mega pixels? 5 MP is really more than enough. If you want to print posters or are a professional photographer only then you would need anything more than 5.

Whatever be the model, go for Nikon. IMHO, Nokin is the best in cameras and don't compromise on features for pixels.

as a user, nikkon never gave me any trouble, and is reliable. Go for the max amt of memory it support, and yes, 5200 is discontinued bcoz it's elder cousines are here to stay. check on the new models..they must have more features.

Well..dont really know about sony, but nikkon is more professional.

Memory cards are of two types. Multimedia Cards (MMC) and SD cards. SD cards are little better (faster, I guess) and a bit more expensive. But price difference is negligible. You must go for SD card. I recently bought one 512 MB from grey market for 1950.

The problem is that i get involved in a new field.. so i usually buy the best i can...
i did note that coolpix of 4,5,7 MP have the same price~=15K..i wanna know why is that.. any photography enthusiasts here??
The problem with sony is that it overprocesses the images. so, a bit of detail is lost. but raw photos look better on a sony. how much is DSC P150?
Coolpix is subtly inferior to sony in low light..(very subtly tho)

Why don't you search at the Nikon site? You will surely find some comparison tables there.

I have so far had no problems even in low lights. I have clicked so many pics of my newborn daughters without flash. But they have turn out well. The thing is that you must set the right options.

Now here's one very lengthy exercise. But it could be worth it.

1. Download the user's manual of all the three models from the manufacturer's website. Study them and decide.

2. Ask a few shop owners. Go to grey market ones as well as official/authorised ones.

I asked the shop owners, they say higher model no. is better..

As for manuals, i checked out lots of settings etc. difference, nothing much.. 5900 seems to be very marginally better
