if u can afford it id say 512 ...
its gonna become the new standard very soon !!
so id rather u get atleast that much if u can
else 256 should be ine for now

the thing is it completely depends on ur usage
256 is good for anything from email to surfing
if u wanna play games then 512 mb ram and a good graphics card is a must

win xp hits the sweet spot at 512MB. Gains beyond that are not worth the money spent.

Depends on what you mean by "minimum required". You can run Win98 with 32MB or even 16MB

Anyway, 128MB is usable if your budget is really tight
256MB will show a big performance jump from 128MB
512MB still shows improvement but but not as much as 128-256
Going above 512MB gives you bragging rights but shows little or no gain except for a few special applications.

For gaming, the order of priority is graphics card, RAM, processor, assuming that no part of the system is too ancient.

Code:
256 req 4 smooth ( almost ) running of xp . 512 or even 1gb recommended
hahahahaha 1gb is not needed for a home pc, perhaps for 3d apps like maya(rendering should be fast with such memory).

Code:
win xp hits the sweet spot at 512MB. Gains beyond that are not worth the money spent.
Damn right ... I used 128mb sd-ram for two and a half years, now Iam using 512mb ddr @ 400mhz.

up2 1gb is fine . after that an overkill 4 atleast now . prices on an all time low . shouldnt b a problem 4 ppl who wanna play games or do some animation or video - editing , or ne other **** besides just surfing or typin in letters

btw , the key word in my post was ' recommended ' 4 the 1gb option . requirement was satisfied with 256mb

256 mb is good enough but 512 mb is great. also ddr ram prices have fallen down and are still falling... its better to go for 512 mb. and dont forget longhorn will require min 512 mb for a smooth operation.
