read only menace help anybody!!!!

hey guys iam having a problem wid my hardware or software dunno

actually each and every folder in my harddrive is marked read only (the one that cannot be unchecked) when i right click to view properties of them.

ive tried all the possible partition types by reformating the HD and have tried xp /vista /xp media centre ,all of them show the folders readonly
files in folders arnt readonly though.

i have sata cgate harddrive 160 gb.
and have tried every thing one could possibly think of including resizing and deleting the partitions.

is it a boot sector virus???????????

actually i tried that one thankz "mrintech"
but doesnt seem to solve the problem
coz if it would have been a registry hack reformating to vista would have solved the problem
