The port that Apache Tomcat is listening on is port 8080 by default.
Modify the Server.xml file Tomcat4\conf directory or Tomcat5\conf and change port to something else like 18099 or 19088 or anything u think...

NB: Reading ur post heading i thought its laptop related but its not

dude try the ports i have mentioned! 8080 is used by many apps by default like Java etc so try with the ports i mentioned and let us know what happened! And the change i told was in server.xml. there should be something like Connector port

anyways..

Do a port scan and see which utility is using the default port 80. Stop that service and then try starting Apache.

well fox, that is not the solution i am looking for...i am trying to know what is causing the problem and make it work....
i am not asking for an alternative way...

more over,i have already said i have tried using other ports from http conf file of the apache...but didnt helped...

plus...if i change the port there are other complication related to it..i have experienced in past...
most of the php script use path to thier script...
http://localhost/scriptname
ie http://localhost/wordpress/wp-admin/

i am trying to migrate many script from desktop to laptop...if i change the port i have to manually change these kind of address of each script...which is easier said than done...
and when i move some script from my laptop to comp...i have to change it again...
so can be easily said(to change the port) than done...and for ur info there are no tomcat folder in either easyphp or wamp installation of apache...
(it is there if we install it separately, apache)

i am not using any java...iis...oracle..even removed sql server....
so what might have caused problem...
i am gong for xampp now...lets see..
