32 bit or 64 bit

Hi guys just joined thinkdigit today!!!!
had been a guest for quiet some time

I want to know whether a 64 bit os is faster than 32 bit ones?
Also how is the compatibility and availability
of 64 bit softwares(i generally use freewares and gnu)?

I am currently using vista home premium 32 bit.

I have a 64 bit processor--
dual core 2.66
mobo-d102ggc2(ati chipset onboard)
