screen res stuck at 1440*900 :(

this is very very irritating i have ubuntu 8.04 with all the eye candy turned on and with the 3D windows and stuff like that,
now my screen res is stuck at 1440*900 @67 refresh rate and i want it to be 1024*768 @75 or 85(my windows has this combo).
since i have a CRT 17" 1440*900 is really bad and painful.

please tell me what i can do.
i did google and spent lot of time but they were of not big help.

when i try to change it, it goes back to 1440*900.

hv u updated ur graphics driver ?? it looks like it! coz this has made ur graphics stuck (set wud be a good word) to its NATIVE resolution

Even I faced the same problem with Ubuntu in my old PC
My resolution had stuck at 800x600.........
I don't know why that happened but I uninstalled Ubuntu after that
It works fine with my new PC with a 19" LCD

yup, tats the reason y i was asking the OP abt he updating his graphics drivers via Linux, coz maybe the new drivers Must hv set the reso to its native resolution..

but, wat happenede to ur reso ?? was that stuck as soon as u installed uBuntu or only after a graphics driver installation.. ?

sorry for the late reply. the res was normal 1024*768 when i installed ubuntu.
after i updated the graphic drivers it went to 1440 thingi.
i also installed compiz fusion, and i do not clearly remember which caused this.

Well, hv u tried uninstalling these newly installed s/w one-by-one to find the glitch....?
