You can take C2D as P5

And don't get confused b/w core 2 deo and dual core. Both r diff.

dun give wierd names

pentium series followed similar architecture and hence the series

core 2 duo has has a lot of different categories too....penryn's are 45nm while other older are 65nm processors
dual core and core 2 duo are different too.
core 2 quad is becoming common and core 2 extreme are also there

coming up are the nehalems core i7

WTF .... its crap to compare Conroe with Prescott ... P4 is past ... just for ur comparison ... a 1.8 Ghz Core2 Duo is better than 3.4 Ghz Pentium Dual Core (which is nuthing but two P4's slapped together in one chip) in day to day performance. plus Core to duo has other advantages like Less heat, less power, More overcloackibility etc ...

Pentium dual cores that are in market now (as entry level budget processors E2160 E2180 etc) are actually scaled down Conroe's or I would they are like Celeron's during Pentium 4's age.

There is absolutely no relation between Pentium4 and core2duo.

core 2 is a totally different architecture. Intel tried build upon P4's architecture and they faced lot of issues with speed, scalability, heat, power dissipation. So, they went back to blackboard and created new architecture called core microarchitecture. That is the beginning of core duo. Then came conroe microarchitecture which shifted the balance of power towards Intel. Core2duo was based on this architecture. Now, it is Penryn microarchitecture for core2duo's and Yorkfield for Core2quad.

Intel is going to release Nehalem microarchitecture on November 14th.

These are always confusing. Pentium D, Dual core, core2duo.
I always get confuse between them. and clear formula ?

Only three lineups:

1) Intel Pentium Dual Core a.k.a Intel Dual Core (stripped down Conroe)
2) Intel Core2Duo (Penryn)
3) Intel Core2Quad (Yorkfield)

next gen: Intel Core i7 (based on nehalem and using LGA1366 pin layout)

Pentium D and Core Duo are phased out already and not at all in the market.

But I use a Pentium D 2.8 ghz. Is this cpu sufficient for todays gaming environment with HD 4850.

@oofan.is.back
Yep... but the performance is not so good if u compare it with a C2D 1.8GHz+HD4850...

Current gen conventional games are all GPU bound, so even a fast single core coupled up with a good GPU would run the game pretty much fine.
Its the real time simulators that are more CPU bound than GPUs.
