what is APPCRASH????

im getting getting a message in laptop when i open a file that it cant be opened...
in details it show APPCRASH....is it harmful??how to avoid it....should i need to format my system??im using vista business......

Can you post the complete crash info that is displayed when this APPCRASH occurs?
